Since its inception as a radio orchestra in the 1940s, the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra has dedicated itself to playing masterpieces from the Baroque to the contemporary, often presenting the Israeli premieres of these works before cheering crowds. The ensemble is currently enjoying a period of unprecedented artistic growth under its dynamic music director, Leon Botstein, who has received international acclaim for his unusually creative approach to programming. Appearing with the orchestra in Berkeley is the gifted violinist Robert McDuffie, praised by the San Francisco Chronicle as "a musician of probing intelligence, a violinist of authority, and a force of great vitality."
