The Theatrical Synagogue on the Secular Stage
Lecture:
August 13, 2009
The Jewish theater, born in 1876, reached it's zenith with the Hebrew-speaking Habima's spectacular production of The Dybbuk in 1922. Dr. Donny Inbar will discuss how this remarkable play about the mystic world of the shtetl turned into the most spectacular offspring of a young secular Jewish theater.
S. An-sky's drama and its production, born in Konstantin Stanislavsky's studio in Moscow, was a landmark in world theater showcasing the mystic world of Hasidism and Kabala in the shtetl.
Dr. Donny Inbar is the Director for Arts and Culture at the Israel Center. A theater professional, he received his Ph.D. from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, where he researched the birth of Yiddish and Jewish theater.
