The Dybbuk
Theater:
July 8, 9, and 12, 2009
For almost 100 years, The Dybbuk has been the signature production of the Habima, the first Hebrew-language theater and Israel's national theater company. The recent Habima interpretation of S. Anksy's story of love, kabbalah and exorcisms will come to the Contemporary Jewish Museum in conjunction with the exhibition Chagall and the Artists of the Russian Jewish Theater, 1919-1949.
The Dybbuk was one of the most popular productions in Moscow during its time, drawing Jewish as well as non-Jewish visitors with its mix of shtetl folklore and expressionistic acting and stage design. The Museum's current exhibition Chagall and the Art of the Russian Jewish Theater, 1919-1949, contains costume and scene design from the original 1922 production, much of it never before seen outside of Russia.
A free, family-oriented puppet demonstration with actors will take place Sunday, July 12 at 3 PM.
