Dilemmas of Law and Security: Fighting Terrorism and Protecting Human Rights
with Professor Daphne Barak-Erez
January 13, 2010
Fighting terrorism in the turn of the 21 century poses a serious challenge for civilized societies, seeking to balance the need to protect the security of their citizens with the fear that the use of extreme measures against terrorists may overstep democratic values and infringe human rights on the other hand.
In this lecture, Professor Daphne Barak-Erez will discuss dilemmas related to the search for this balance, bringing examples of specific methods such as the use of physical measures in interrogations, administrative detentions, targeted killings of active terrorists, and more. The discussion will focus on Israel, along with a comparative analysis of the situation in other countries, such as the United States.
