The Ashkenazim
Documentary screening:
Saturday, March 29, 2008
The Ashkenazim follows the lives of a group of young people in Israel in search of their Ashkenazi roots. They seek to reconnect with their Jewish European heritage, a heritage they feel is being lost as a result of the State of Israel acclimatizing to its Middle Eastern location. From the formation of ‘Ashkenazi Identity’, an organization established to promote a cultural revolution through to the creation of an erotically-charged electro-Yiddish cabaret, individuals look back to their cultural history.
The Ashkenazim is a humorous and, at times, moving documentary about self-identity, heritage and social change.
